Electric car manufacturer NIO's flagship location in Europe, NIO House Amsterdam, occupies a historic seven-story building on Amsterdam’s Keizersgracht. Architecture firm MVRDV transformed it into a modern haven with a variety of spaces, focusing strongly on sustainable materials. The entrance and showroom on the entire ground floor and first floor level are clad in custom Aectual Wrap panels, creating a calm and elegant atmosphere.
The color scheme for the building was inspired by NIO’s vision; “blue sky coming”, transitioning from earthy colors on the lower floors to an airy blue that fills the building’s modernist rooftop pavilion. Architects MVRDV sought sustainable, innovative and beautiful materials, leading them to choose Aectual Wrap panels.
Aectual Wrap panels are made from recycled beverage carton material—not the cardboard itself, but the polymer and aluminum that remain after recycling the cardboard. Like all Aectual products, after use, the Wrap panels can be shredded and the material can be re-printed, ensuring full circular use.
Color and texture were particularly important for the design, as MVRDV sought earthy colors and a fluted texture for the walls. Aectual panels provided exactly that. The designers customized their own textured pattern, which subtly changes in various areas. In the bar area, for instance, a slender vertical pattern adorns the walls, extending in a wider pattern at the bar itself, creating a subtle playful accent.
The various areas demonstrate the versatility of Aectual Wrap panels, as the panels are used to clad straight walls, corner-shaped panels around columns, and even curved panels in the kids’ ‘joy camp’ area. The panels are mounted nearly seamlessly, and in some areas, special elements such as alcoves and TV screens are easily integrated into the custom panel designs. The panels are even integrated onto the elevator shaft and doors.
The result is absolutely soothing. MVRDV opted for the color ‘sand,’ one of Aectual’s 13 standard colors in recycled beverage carton material. This specific color gives the areas a calm and natural atmosphere, serving as a perfect backdrop for NIO’s collection.
