E.ON & Aectual: a collaboration of energy and aesthetics

How do you translate an energy network into architecture?

For E.ON, Aectual developed a custom 3D-printed wall panel system that transforms the company’s visual identity into a spatial experience. Inspired by E.ON’s logo dot, the dynamic structure creates a continuous surface that evokes associations with networks, cables, and flowing energy systems.

Developed specifically for the project, the wall panels combine straight and curved geometries to create a seamless three-dimensional effect throughout selected areas of the interior. The result is a highly tactile architectural surface that brings movement, depth, and identity into the space.

Produced using Aectual’s large-scale 3D-printing technology, every panel was made to measure for the exact interior geometry. Because the elements were printed on demand, no material waste was generated during production. Pigments were mixed directly into the recycled material, allowing the panels to match E.ON’s brand colors with precision.

The material itself is made from recycled consumer waste plastic and forms part of Aectual’s circular system. After use, the panels can be taken back, shredded, and reprinted into new architectural products- extending both the material lifecycle and the design system itself.

The project demonstrates how digital manufacturing enables architectural systems that are simultaneously expressive, circular, and globally scalable. By combining algorithmic design with local 3D production, interiors can be tailored to each context while maintaining a consistent brand language.

“Our collaboration with E.ON demonstrates how circular design, digital manufacturing, and brand identity can come together in one architectural system,” says Hedwig Heinsman, co-founder of Aectual. “By transforming recycled waste into a custom design language that reflects E.ON’s visual identity, we create interiors that are both expressive and circular. The system is designed to evolve over time, allowing elements to be reprinted and reinterpreted for future applications.”

Beyond the architectural application itself, the project also reflects a broader shift in how branded environments are conceived: not as static interiors, but as adaptable systems that can evolve alongside changing technologies, communities, and sustainability ambitions.

First introduced at E.ON’s House of Energy in Berlin, the system is designed as a scalable architectural language that can be adapted to future locations and contexts.
